When onsite support makes sense
If a kitchen is already short-staffed, or the equipment is hard to move, onsite help is often the quickest way to get a fryer, oven or dishwasher back into service. We arrange support for parts that have been supplied through FoodServ Parts Store, with the aim of reducing downtime and avoiding repeat call-outs caused by a loose connection, wrong seal, or an untested thermostat.
This service is commonly used for element changes, thermostat swaps, gasket replacement, burner fitting and switch panel repairs. It also suits busy sites in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein where shutdown time has to be kept short. In coastal areas, salty air and moisture can make terminals, seals and controls fail sooner than expected, so a proper fit and test matters.
- Commercial ovens, fryers, dishwashers and similar kitchen equipment
- Supplied parts that need fitting, alignment or post-fit testing
- Sites where equipment cannot be removed without disrupting service
- Repairs where part compatibility must be checked on the spot
What the onsite visit includes
Each visit is planned around the part, the machine and the access available on site. Our field fitting team can help with stripping out the failed item, fitting the replacement, checking wire terminations, reseating gaskets and confirming basic operation after installation. If a part is not the correct match, we flag it before further time is wasted.
Depending on the equipment and site conditions, the visit may include one or more of the following:
- Part confirmation against the machine model, serial details and existing sample
- Removal of worn elements, burners, thermostats, switches or seals
- Fitting and alignment of supplied parts
- Basic electrical continuity checks and visual safety checks
- Post-fit testing under normal operating conditions
We do not push unnecessary replacement. If a fault points to another issue, such as damaged wiring, poor earthing or blocked drainage on a dishwasher, we will say so and help you plan the next step.
How the process works from booking to test run
To keep the visit efficient, we ask for the equipment make and model, a clear fault description, and photos where possible. That lets us identify the part before the team leaves Midrand. Once the part is sourced and the appointment is set, the fitter arrives with the required tools and confirms the job on site.
- Step 1: Send equipment details and fault notes to parts@foodservparts.co.za
- Step 2: We check compatibility and confirm the right part
- Step 3: A visit is arranged in the nearest coverage area
- Step 4: The part is fitted and tested on site
- Step 5: We report any follow-up items, such as worn wiring or scaling
For food businesses that trade over lunch and supper, we can often schedule early morning or after-hours support where access allows. This is especially useful for schools, takeaways, hotels and canteens that cannot afford a long stop. A same-day turnaround is not always possible, but urgent calls are handled as quickly as stock and route planning allow.
Turnaround times, access and site readiness
Turnaround depends on where the site is, whether the correct part is already on hand, and how easy the appliance is to reach. Midrand and Johannesburg jobs are often the quickest to attend, while Durban and Cape Town visits may need more lead time. For larger estates or multi-unit kitchens, we may plan more than one fitter or book a return visit if the equipment needs cooling down first.
To save time on the day, the area around the appliance should be clear, the power isolated where needed, and any gas supply shut off in line with site rules. If the equipment is under counter or built in, let us know in advance so the right access can be planned. On older units, labels may be worn off, so a photo of the rating plate helps a lot, agter that the job moves faster.
- Bring a clear path to the appliance and enough working space
- Have the unit cooled, drained or isolated as required
- Keep the model number, serial number and photos ready
- Tell us about any previous repairs, leaks or tripped breakers
Pricing approach and what affects the call-out
Pricing is based on the type of support needed, distance from our Midrand base, and the complexity of the fitting or test. Simple onsite fitting for a single part is priced differently from a visit that involves fault finding, panel work or more than one appliance. Where a job needs special access, extra labour or a second visit, that is quoted up front where possible.
We keep the pricing approach practical. You pay for the work required, not for extras that do not add value. If a part has already been supplied and only installation is needed, the visit is usually simpler. If compatibility still has to be checked on site, or if the machine shows signs of other wear, we make that clear before proceeding.
For planned maintenance, it can be more economical to group fittings on the same site visit. That works well for kitchens with several ovens or fryers, or for operators who want monthly or quarterly attention to seals, controls and heating components.
Maintenance intervals that help parts last longer
Good maintenance lowers the chance of repeat failure, especially on heavy-use equipment. In busy commercial kitchens, seals harden, elements scale and switches wear faster than many operators expect. The right interval depends on the workload, water quality, grease build-up and whether the site is inland or near the coast.
- Monthly: Visual check of gaskets, switch response, burner flame pattern and obvious wear
- Quarterly: Clean and inspect terminals, thermostat accuracy, door seals and connection points
- Twice yearly: Full review of high-use fryers, ovens and dishwashers, including post-fit testing where parts were changed
- After any power event: Check controls and heating circuits after load-shedding surges or generator changeover
Regular attention helps prevent small faults from becoming a kitchen stop. A split gasket or tired thermostat may seem minor, but on a hot service day it can mean poor heat retention, longer cook times, or product loss.
